The first problem "Cannot Group that Selection" is normally caused by one of two things. The first, and most likely cause, is due to the fact that your Pivot Table employee data range includes blank cells within the address group field in which you are trying to group. Excel does not know what it should do with the one blank cell in regards to grouping with date cells.
Make sure that there are no empty spaces in the employee data, all the dates are real dates (You can check that by changing the format in the database, and if there are some dates that don't change, they need to be "converted" to numbers again) then try creating the pivot table again.
In a Pivot Table, you can group the items in a Row or Column field. For example, items in a employee date field can be grouped by employee month, and items in a number field can be grouped by tens.To solve the problem Remove all blank rows from the PivotTable data range. To refresh the PivotTable, follow these steps : Select any item in the PivotTable. On the Data menu, click Refresh Data.
