FFMPEG is used as a library that is called by both MPlayer and Mencoder (which are programs) to play or encode audio and video. MEncoder close sibling to MPlayer and can convert all the formats that MPlayer understands. It seems to me that Mplayer and Mencoder mainly act as "wrapping" around FFMPEG functionality.

To use mencoder, you must specify at least an input file, an output file, an audio encoder and a video encoder. FFMPEG can convert MP4 file while MENCODER cant.. in case of 3GP, FFMEG cant convert...well, MENCODER can but the video will become too speedy (not sound) & will finished within seconds..

    Re: Ffmpeg vs mencoder

FFmpeg is a command line tool that is composed of a collection of free software / open source libraries. Actually both use 100% same encoder inside - mencoder has some additional nn-xvid related features like build-in filters.
FFmpeg includes libavcodec, an audio/video codec library used by several other projects, and libavformat, an audio/video container mux and demux library.
