Here is the list of most popular download managers for line.
    1) Wget - network utility to download from HTTP and FTP. It works very well with slow and unstable internet connections. It is not GUI based, it works interactively in the background. Wget is a default download manager with ubuntu.
    2) Gwget - is a GNOME based application for Wget. It has features like system icon, multiple downloads etc. It even has a powerful preference manager.
    3) Curl - Client to download files from servers for any supported protocols. Features include FTP, HTTP, proxy , file transfer resume etc.
    4) Axel - is not GUI based, it works on command prompt. It has a built-in accelerator program and it is light weight.
    5) Multiget - is a user friendly GUI based application. It is a cross-platform program. It supports multi-tasks with multi-threading.

aria2 is a command line download manager client program. Features include resuming and segmented downloading. HTTP,FTP,BitTorrent protocols are supported. Kget is another good download manager which enables you to keep all your downloads in one dialog with adding and removing facility. The other information included in the dialog is progress, remaining time, speed, size etc.

As you said firefox works great with linux systems. Firefrox it-self has some download manager plug-in's. DownThemAll - dwonload manager / accelerator built inside firefox. FlashGot - it integrated external download managers with firefox, it can be used to select one link, selected link and even all links on the page with one click.
