The messages, as you said have disappeared, are they " read " messages. Meaning, had they been read already ? Setting the following registry key to 0 enables the POP3 connector to leave messages on the POP3 server after downloading:

    Code:
    HKLM \ Software \ Microsoft \ SmallBusinessServer \ Network \ POP3
    connector \ deletefromserver.
Note that this feature is not compatible with MS.

Go to Tools - Accounts and verify that only one instance of the mail account created. Then verify that a whole to leave a copy on the server. If removing them yet, you can make a log file through Tools - Options - Advanced - Maintenance to diagnose the problem. Also call the system administrator at the University to verify that the POP3 server allows you to leave a copy on the server and does not delete it.

By default, e-mail in a POPA common type of Internet-based mail account. Examples are Windows Live Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail. After you add a POP account to Entourage, messages from the account appear in the folder list under On My Computer. account is deleted from the mail server once it is downloaded into Entourage. If a message has been deleted from the mail server, you are not able to access it from the mail Web site or another mail application. Also, when you empty your Deleted Items folder, the message is permanently deleted. But you can set Entourage to leave a copy of each message in your POP account on the server.

If you configure your POP account server options in Entourage to leave mail on the server, you must delete mail from both your computer and the server, or choose settings that automatically delete mail from the server when it reaches a certain age or when you delete mail from your computer.
    1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts, and then click the Mail tab.
    2. Double-click the POP account that you want to change, and then click the Options tab.
    3. Under Server options, select the Leave a copy of each message on the server check box, and then select the options that you want.

To avoid having to delete mail from PC and server, select the Delete messages from server after they are removed from this computer check box. Or, select Delete all messages from server after verification box <number> days and then enter the number of days to keep your mail before deleting the server.

If you would rather have IMAP support for Windows Live Hotmail you could try mBox Mail for Mac.

There is also a nice version for the iPhone.

For Windows users you could try out http://download.live.com/wlmail
