    Windows services will not start

I have a number of services that will not start-
Here are a few of them with the error number:

    Help and Support (Error 1083)
    Workstation (Error 1083)
    Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (Error 1068)
    Security Center (Error 1068)
    System Restore (Error 1083)
    Server (Error 1083)
    Automatic Updates (Error 1083)
    Alerter (Error 1068)

    I'm running Windows XP sp3
Thank you for any help you can give to get this item back up and running-

This problem occurs when one of the following conditions is true:

    * Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is not running.
    * BITS cannot successfully connect to the Web site.

    Check this to revolve it
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start

Background Intelligent Transfer Service is running-
Followed the links given, but it did not help-

Do you think that doing a repair install of the OS resolve this problem?

Re: Windows services will not start

I did a "repair" install of the OS and that worked great-
All my programs and data remained affected-
Had to go to MS web and download the updates, but that took a very short amount of time-
Thanks to all that posted their help-

Re: Windows services will not start

The problem is that all service information is cached on startup. Modifying the configurations of the services will have no effect until the cache is refreshed after a subsequent restart. To resolve the problem, download wscsvcfix.zip from the following link, and save the file to Desktop. Unzip the file and double-click to run it. Click the Inspect and Fix button once. Restart Windows for the changes to take effect. Note that this utility requires administrator credentials to run correctly.
