How to configure DEP and PAE in Windows 7

    Hi,
I need some tips on configuring PAE and DEP on mt system which is currently running on windows 7. Currently I have 4 GB of RAM and Windows 7 32 bit memory. Now 700MB of memory is set reserved for using other functions. I have tried the same by using BCDEdite and forced PAE to configure the amount of memory used. But does not get the expected result. Please post relevant suggestion. Thanks.

Re: How to configure DEP and PAE in Windows 7

Here the PAE (Physical Address Extension) is the virtual memory. It is not the physical memory of your computer. In every process in 32 bit operating system a 4Gb of virtual address space is assigned in which 2GB is configured to reserved for Kernel work and other for user. The PAE here changes the same and assign 1GB for kernel and others for users.

You can configure the dump settings fro PAE by the following tips. First open System Properties. Then go to Advance tab and click on Settings. It lies in Startup > Recovery box. Now under debugging information click on Kernel memory dump. Accept the default dump file and type the path of your own file. You must logged in as administrator to perform the work. Restart your system.

DEP is a important security feature which is recommended not to disable till you does not have any other alternative. In most of the systems the settings for DEP and PAE is optimal. Never change the settings unless not required. You will have to configure boot parameters in order to configure them. They are as follows - /noexecute enables and configures DEP, execute disables DEP and PAE, /pae enables PAE & /nopae disables PAE.
