First make sure your windows installation disk is in proper condition also hope your cd rom is working fine. This error may occur if the registry entries and the drivers for the mass storage controller hardware in the backup computer are not installed in Windows XP.check here for solution http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314082

The thing is, your laptop came be pre-installed Windows Vista, these systems are not built to Run Windows XP, You can install Windows 7 if you want to. Even if you tweak and install Windows XP on your laptop, sound drivers wont work. The hardware architecture is so built that it wont support Windows XP.
