Open windows explorer > go to the Tools > Folder Options

there go to tab > view > drop down menu go for Hidden files and folder and check it

    For xp
    C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes then check in there

The local pc directory where the .ipsw files are stored is in Home Folder/Library/Application Support/iTunes/iPod Firmware or ~username/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/ or %Userprofile%\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates. Easiest way is to click Start->Run and copy and paste. In there you will find the IOS version downloaded from the itunes store to your computer.

Which version of Itunes are you using? I would say, try to use Windows Installer Cleanup to clear all the corrupt files in your pc and then try to uninstall and reinstall the latest version of Itunes and see if that sorts out the problem. You can download the Windows Installer Cleanup directly from here.
