Get Moonlight 2.0 beta with Silverlight 3.0 compatibility

Moonlight is an open source implementation of Silverlight, primarily for Linux and other Unix/X11 based operating systems. The Moonlight project has reached the beta stage of Moonlight 2.0, its open source web application framework compatible with Microsoft's Silverlight. It has been a long wait but the first beta of Moonlight 2.0 is finally out. Moonlight 2.0 beta is available for download from the Mono project's website. It is distributed as a Firefox plugin and is supported on both 32-bit and 64-bit Linux distributions.

This released version contains Silverlight 3.0 features like:
    • Easing functions
    • SaveFileDialog
    • MultiScaleImage 3.0 API enhancements
    • MediaStreamSource now supports PCM audio data, RGBA and YV12 video data.
    • WriteableBitmap is supported.

Available as source code or as a plug-in for FireFox on Linux and Unix systems, the entire plugin is roughly 9MB and it bundles the Mono virtual machine and other necessary runtime components. It uses several pieces of Microsoft's Silverlight stack, such as the Dynamic Language Runtime and Microsoft's Silverlight controls.

The moonlight plugin itself is open source and completely free redistributable. The only component of Moonlight out of the box can not be redistributed or includes codecs is. Plugin will automatically create a binary codec pack from Microsoft after the cause of obtaining the user. While the release is feature complete, testers are warned that a security audit of the code has yet to be performed and further bugs are likely to be identified before the project reaches release status.

When installing the Novell Moonlight plugin Firefox may prevent the installation and present you with an information bar asking you to install software on the computer. To continue the installation click Allow.

Once you install Moonlight to play video or audio, you will be prompted by Moonlight to install the Microsoft Media Pack for Moonlight available from Microsoft. Alternatively, you can build Moonlight from source code and link against mpeg codecs on your own.The API implemented by Moonlight 2.0 is a slight superset of Microsoft Silverlight 2.0 as it contains a few of the 3.0 APIs that fit naturally into our development process.Although a significant amount of progress has been made in the effort to achieve Silverlight 2.0 compatibility, the plugin is still at a relatively early stage of development and will require more work before it's production-ready.
