Problems deleting items from the desktop

Morning when i remove some useless shortcut from my desktop and when Turn my pc on now, what i saw was the deleted shortcut came back on the desktop and i done some changes on my desktop, which were change to back what it was .I done it again and restart it but no solution the icon where there i am really having problems in deleting items from the desktop.please help .

Have you delete them like This :

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.
3. Click to select the check boxes for the desktop items that you want to display, or click to clear the check boxes for the desktop items that you want to remove.

If you are in vista i think you are having issue with your saving part vista is not saving your setting when you log off .
