I have some videos with avi format. I would like to play this avi files on my iTunes. But the problem is that iTunes is unable to detect the file. How do you play avi files on itunes? Do you need any codecs for this? Where can I download it?

The .avi file type is a multimedia container format. It doesn't specify what codec is to be used to encode the file. So iTunes does not like it and probably won't play it regardless of the video/audio formats used. You can't import an avi or any other file except the apple formats into itunes.
Try Perian. Perian enables QuickTime application support for additional media:

* Audio types: Windows Media Audio v1 & v2, Flash ADPCM, Xiph Vorbis (in Matroska), and MPEG Layer I & II Audio, True Audio, DTS Coherent Acoustics, Nellymoser ASAO

If you simply want to play the avi file on your computer then I think VLC media player is best. VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a media converter or a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on networks.
