Net Send command in Windows Vista

    Hi friends,

Few days back, I had installed Windows Vista in my laptop. I tried to check whether the Net Send command is implemented in Vista or not. When I tried to check by doing a NET in a DOS windows, I didn't find Net Send command anywhere..

Could someone suggest whether Net Send command is available in Vista or not ? If not, then is there any alternative available ?

    Any ideas....

Re: Net Send command in Windows Vista

Unfortunately, from Windows Vista, the Net Send Messenger service has been removed.

Net Send cmd wasn't available in Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Me.
Net send command can be used in Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003 only.

There is a simple, yet powerful netsend replacement utility called Softros LAN Messenger for messages broadcasting, files transfer, group chatting.

    Download Softros LAN Messenger

As an alternative, use terminal services messenger --

    D:\>msg
Send a message to a user.

    MSG {username | sessionname | sessionid | @filename | *}
    [/SERVER: servername] [/TIME: seconds] [/V] [/W] [message]

    where,

username :- identifies the specified username.
sessionname :- name of the session.
sessionid :- id of the session.
@filename :- identifies a file containing a list of usernames, sessionnames, and sessionids to send the message to.
    * :- sends message to all sessions on specified server.
/SERVER :- servername server to contact (default is current).
/TIME :- time delay(in seconds) to wait for receiver to acknowledge msg.
/V :- displays information about actions being performed.
/W :- waits for response from user, useful with /V.
message :- specifies message to send. If nothing is specified, prompts for it or reads from stdin.

Re: Net Send command in Windows Vista

    - Go to "Start" button,
    - Select "Run.."
    - Type "cmd"
A black screen of cmd.exe will appear.

The syntax for Netsend command cmd looks like:

    NET SEND {name | * | /DOMAIN[:name] | /USERS} message

    • name --- can be user name, PC name, or messaging name to send the message to. If the name is a computer name that contains blank characters, it need to be enclosed the alias in quotation marks (" ").

    • * --- sends the message to all the names in your group.

    • /DOMAIN[:name] --- Sends the message to all the names in the workstation domain. If name is specified, the message is sent to all the names in the specified domain or workgroup.

    • /USERS --- sends the message to all users connected to the server.

    • message --- Is text to be sent as a message.

    For example,
If you want to send "Our server will shut down in 10 minutes" notification to all PC users connected to the DOMAIN, then
type: net send /domain:users Our server will shut down in 10 minutes.

According to me, Net send is an instant messenging service native to Windows XP that can only be used across networks.
