If you use the system tray icon to gain access to Norton Antivirus' features, you should leave this process running. If you do not use the icon you can safely terminate this process. For that you need to right click on your Taskbar, then choose Properties, under the Taskbar tab you need to click on the Customize button. Then under the Current Items highlight the Symantec entry(s). Then you need to choose Always Show using the drop down arrow button, after that click on, then click on Apply and again click on OK tab.

The vptray.exe process provides a system tray icon with which you can configure Norton Antivirus and/or run virus scans.

To enable the system tray icon in Symantec System Center

    1. Right-click the server group, client group, or parent server in the Symantec System Center console
    2. Click All Tasks--> Symantec AntiVirus--> Client Administrator Only Options.
    3. Click Show Symantec AntiVirus Icon on Desktop
    4. Click OK.

If you do not use the icon you can safely terminate this process. If the icon does not appear on unmanaged clients, then you must modify the registry to make this change.

To enable the system tray icon on unmanaged clients

    1. Exit all open programs.
    2. Click Start> Run. The Run dialog box appears.
    3. Type regedit
    4. Click OK. The Registry Editor appears.

    1. Go to the following key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intel\Landesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\AdministratorOnly\General

    2. In the right pane, double-click the following value: ShowVPIcon

    3. Change the value to 1.
    4. Close the Registry Editor.
    5. Restart the computer.
