    Converting and Playing .avi files

I have downloaded some of the video files on my system from the internet. These files are having .avi extension. I use windows media player to play these files and the files were playing well but when used Quick time player for playing avi files then it fails to open. I want a converter that can convert .avi files to mp4 files. Also specify some of the converter software that convert and play these avi files.

When playing avi files using some music player you might face problem because your playback device has not been configured properly. The problem with playback device may result in cracking of sound, poor graphic display etc. window by default set the playback to twice the original size of the video clip. To improve the performance you can follow these steps:
    • Go to Start/ Control Panel and then click on Multimedia.
    • In the Video tab click on windows and then click on the original size in the Window box.
    • Then click on OK to save it.

You can convert .avi file into mp4 and play it in quick time player to play it. To convert the avi file you need to follow these steps.
    1. Download and install Oxelon Media Converter which is freeware converter software to convert .avi file into some other format. Also download and install plug-in for Oxelon Media Converter.
    2. Click on Oxelon Media Converter icon from the desktop to launch it and select your .avi files.
    3. Now you need to select your audio and video code. Thus for video select Quicktime MPEG4 and for audio codec select AAC.
    4. You can also change the properties of the .avi files i.e. Width, Height etc.
    5. Click on add files button. Also specify the path where it should save the converted files.
    6. Finally click on conversion button to start the conversion it.

If you are using quick time player or some other player to play .avi files then you may receive that the codec is missing or not installed properly. So install the particular codec to play .avi files. You can follow these steps to install the codec:
    • Go to start/ Control Panel and click on Multimedia.
    • Double click on the video compression codecs on advanced tab.
    • Click on the previously installed codec click on Properties/remove and click yes to give the confirmation to remove it.
    • Close the Multimedia window.
    • To install the codec go to Go to start/ Control Panel and then click on add new hardware.
    • Click next, and then click on no and then again click on yes button.
    • Click on Sound, Video, And Game Controllers in the hardware type box.
    • In the manufacturer box click on appropriate icon
for RLE and Video 1, click Microsoft Video Codecs
      for Cinepak, click SuperMatch
or IR31 or IR32, click Intel
    • Then click on appropriate codec in the model box, click on next and then click on finish. The codec will be installed.

Re: Converting and Playing .avi files

If there are break in sound while playing the avi files or there is no sound then your sound card is not configured properly. Sound in the avi file is not compressed and you can test it using uncompressed file which is provided by the windows platform. So configure the sound by installing the appropriate driver which supports you platform. After the installation of sound driver play the avi file.
