If your temporary Internet Explorer cache folder starts to run out of the allocated disc space, you may be unable to download the Office Update control. Free disk space by deleting the Temporary Internet Files cache.

    • Start Internet Explorer.
    • On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    • Click the General tab, and then click Delete Files under Temporary Internet files.
    • Click to clear the Delete all offline content check box, and then click OK.
    • Click Delete Cookies, and then click OK when you are prompted for confirmation.
    • Under Temporary Internet files, click Settings.
    • In the Settings dialog box, click View Objects.
    • In the Microsoft Windows Explorer window that appears, click Details on the View menu.
    • If the status of any listed object is Damaged, delete the object.
    • Close the Windows Explorer window, and then click OK in the Settings dialog box.
    • Under History, click Clear History, and then click Yes when you are prompted for confirmation.
    • In the Internet Options dialog box, click OK.
    • Enable cookies. To do this, follow these steps:
      • In Control Panel, double-click the Internet Options icon.
      • Click the Privacy tab, and then click Default.
      • Click OK.
In Control Panel, double-click the Internet Options icon.
    • Click the Privacy tab, and then click Default.
    • Click OK.
    • Click Start, click Run , type %temp%, and then click OK.
    • In the Windows Explorer window that appears, delete the contents of this Temp folder.

    I must say just upgrade!
    Try Windows 7 just once.
I am sure you wont turn around for Vista again.

Is Automatic Updates no longer offering Office 2007 SP2 or is it not offered when you run Microsoft Update manually at Microsoft Update website?

Refer to following Microsoft Help Guides:

You receive an error message when you try to apply any of the 2007 Office
service packs on a computer that is running WinXP SP2

How to troubleshoot failures updating your Office installation (via Office
    Update website)

Auto-Update still offers to update, and fails each time it runs (daily).
I give a try to the second link you posted and get back with answers.

    thanks!!
