Use an Equation Field to Create the Fraction:
This method creates a fraction with a horizontal line between the numerator and the denominator.
- Place the insertion point where you want the fraction to appear.
- Press CTRL+F9 to insert field braces.
- Between the field braces, type the following
EQ \F(a,b)- where a and b are the numerator and denominator of the fraction.
- For example, if you want to create the fraction 1/8, the field would look like this
- { EQ \F(1,8)}
- With the insertion point in the field, press SHIFT+F9.
it is in menu Insert -> Object -> Microsoft Equation. If you can not find it, it is not installed yet. You will need to take the Office CD, run setup.exe and choose add / remove modules and there you choose module Equation.
use superscript and subscript formatting to create the fraction:
- Place the insertion point where the fraction is displayed.
- Enter the numerator and select it.
- On the Format menu, click Font.
- Under the Font tab, under Attributes, select the check box, then click OK. The numerator is now exhibitor.
- Press CTRL + Space to clear exponent format for the remainder of the fraction.
- Type the fraction separator bar.
- Type the denominator, and select it.
- On the Format menu, click Font.
- Under the Font tab, under Attributes, select the checkbox index, then click OK. The denominator is now subscripted.
Use Equation Editor to create the fraction:
Note: Equation Editor is not installed during a standard installation. If you perform a standard installation, you must exit Word and restart the installer to install the Equation Editor, before using this method.
This method creates a fraction of a diagonal between the numerator and denominator.
- Place the insertion point where the fraction is to be displayed.
- On the Insert menu, click Object.
- In the Object Type list, click Microsoft Equation Editor 2.0 (Microsoft Word 95 for Windows, version 7.0) or Microsoft Equation 3.0 (Word 97), and then click OK.
- In the Equation toolbar, click the second button on the second line.
- Click to select the type of fraction you want. To find other symbols in the document, you probably want the smallest fraction with the diagonal. Click the second button on the second line.
- In areas with dotted lines, type the numerator and denominator.
- Click outside the equation to return to Word.
