UBCD Fixboot Issue

I was restoring my Desktop pc via ultimate boot cd (UBCD). The system hanged in the middle. I am running windows xp with 1 gigs of ram. I left it for sometime but after that I hard rebooted the system. A new problem is created here right now. When ever the system boots up I cannot see the bios menu. There is no display at all. I tried pressing del, f1 key to get in the bios. But I am not able to access it. Here I want to ask how can I fix the boot.ini file. I think my hard disk is gone because it was giving problem from a long time. Help.

Re: UBCD Fixboot Issue

I will recommend you to run a repair from windows bootable cd. Insert the bootable cd and restart directly from the cpu. Then press Esc key or Tab key. You will see a small menu asking for boot device priority. Select the CD device. When the windows boot menu comes up instead of fresh installation click on repair. Here you will loose you old programs. I hope you have a backup of your data. It nothing works then put UBCD cd and do the same thing mention first. Then select the Fixboot option. If nothing happen from the above solution then there is serious problem with your hard drive. You will need to replace it.

Re: UBCD Fixboot Issue

You will here need to fix the MBR of your hard drive. It is part of hard drive from where you systems boot.ini file is located. It is damaged or corrupted. But don't worry there is an solution to repair. You can boot you system from a floppy drive. If you have or other wise just borrow from someone. Create a bootable floppy form a different windows machine. To do so follow the instruction :
  • Insert the floppy drive and go to start menu > run > type format a: and click Ok.
  • Again click on start > c:\I386 and click on OK. C refers to the drive letter.
  • Right click on the ntlddr file and select copy.
  • Then paste it in the floppy drive.
  • Do the same and copy paste ntdetect.com
  • To create a boot.ini file launch notepad and paste the below code.
[boot loader]
timeout=30
Default= multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows="<Windows XP>"
  • Save the file in the floppy and name it boot.ini
  • Insert the floppy and boot your system.

Re: UBCD Fixboot Issue

I think your Hard Disk is dead. You will need to replace it. It happened same to me before. I tried to fix it UBCD but no result at all. At last I change the drive. If the hard disk has loot of boot errors and bad sector then the disk utility tools cannot repair it. It is a hardware problem. There is a chance of recovering a data from the hard drive by connecting it to a different system. If only one partition is gone then you can also use the hard disk as secondary.
