Simply do right click on the AVG icon in the system tray at the right bottom of your screen, click on "Quit AVG Control Center" , and choose "YES" to ignore the warning in the dialog box that will appear.
IF you want to set avg to not give security warnings during internet surfings, then follow the following instructions:
In case you are not using the AVG Security Toolbar, you can enable/disable the AVG Search-Shield or AVG Active Surf-Shield this way:
- Run AVG User Interface.
- Double click the LinkScanner component.
- Tick/Un-tick the Enable AVG Search-Shield and Enable AVG Active Surf-Shield options.
- Confirm changes by clicking on the Save changes button.

You can also smiply stop the AVG process from the taskmanager , in the processes tab by right clicking the avg.exe and choose end.
I have the same problem.
I would like to disable avg, turn off avg temporarily without uninstall but I can not.
The suggestion by Chatwin only closes down the GUI and not the tasks that are managed by the GUI.
The suggestion by Sonya.T only closes down some of the tasks.
The suggestion by Dwight...alas it is not possible to close some of the several avg tasks from the task manager and even if it were, there are about 4 or 5 of them and to have to close them down each time one boots up would take quite some time.
If anyone has any other suggestsions then please let us know.
Over at the AVG Free forums (here and here) an AVG staff member, Ondra Ploteny, and a Moderator rdsok, direct users to
http://free.avg.com/gb-en/faq.num-1311
which gives the same advice as given here by "Sonya T."
Following that advice, and after shutting down the user interface (tasks avgtray/avggui) leaves the following three tasks running
avgcsrvx.exe
avgrsx.exe
avgwdsvc.exe
but there is also advice (and a link to a program) for disabling specifically AVG 7.0 (prior to the install of 8.0).
[By the way, over at the AVG forums, posts are deleted if at all critical, it seems. I only mentioned that their link to the faq:
http://free.avg.com/faq.num-1311
does not work if one is located Japan.]
