    Rollovers absent in Photoshop CS3

I upgraded Adobe Photoshop from CS2 to CS3. But I noticed the rollover feature is been missing in this version. It seems like Adobe has abandoned the ability to easily and directly make rollovers in Photoshop CS3. Should I switch back to CS2 or is there any other option to create rollovers in photoshop CS3 ? Please suggest......

Yes, its true that Adobe has not provided the option for rollovers in Photoshop CS3. If you are comfortable with CS2, then simply switch back to CS2 where you can create rollovers using ImageReady.

    • In Photoshop , create two buttons of the same size for the rollovers.
Note - The two buttons have to be different in some way, even a text color change will do.

    • Save the images in Photoshop and open them in Image Ready or just click the Photoshop to ImageReady button(last button in the toolbox).
Note - Make sure both images are in the same image or document on a separate layer. If they aren't, Ctrl+ click on the layer in either image, then go to Edit > Copy, then click on the other image/document and go to Edit > Paste.

    • Disable the text and/or button for the over state, (the image that will be seen when the mouse rolls over the image).

    • In the rollover window, click on create new rollover state button. If the window isn't enabled, go to Window > Rollovers.

    • Next, click on the over state layer in the rollover window and go back to the layers palette and
      (a) click the eye next to the button and text layer for the over state button/image to enable them.
      (b) click on the eye next to the layers for the normal state, the state in which the mouse is not over the image, to disable them.

    • Next click on the Internet Explorer button in the toolbox to preview the rollover. If you're satisfied with the result, save the rollover.
To save the rollover, go to File > Save Optimized As (Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S). In the window that comes up, make sure the Save As Type field is set to HTML and Images.

In photoshop CS3, eventhough the rollovers feature has been abandoned from ImageReady, you can still create rollovers using Fireworks.

In Fireworks, you have to use the Behavior palette to create rollover buttons.

Design your images and rollovers in Fireworks. Put your images in one layer and your rollovers in another.
You need to use 2 frames. Frame 1 for actual images and frame 2 for rollover images.
Insert slices on each of the images (Insert > Slice).
Click on the slice and go to Window > Behaviors.
Next click on the '+' button and choose Simple Rollover.
    Click OK.
Repeat the behavior steps for each of the slices.

The final step is to export the file. Fireworks will automatically convert the rollovers to javascript and html. You don't have do any programming, it automatically done for you when you export the file.

When you export the file there are two things you need to keep in mind:
-Under slicing, choose 'Use slice objects'
-Under HTML style, choose Dreamweaver 2.0 (or 3.0)

Fireworks will export a .htm file to the directory you have specified (along with the images). Browse the .htm file from IE or Netscape and you'll see your swap images working beautifully.
