    Hi,
This happen if your user profile is deleted by using command prompt or windows explorer
or by some other applications. Or your profile is got corrupted.
    For Windows XP
Use the system restore setting in your windows.
Go to Start Menu > Program > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

    For Windows Vista
Use the system restore setting in your windows.
Go to Start Menu > Program > System Tools > System Restore. Or Type system restore in the search box
Restore your computer to an earlier time. This can clear your logon error.
If nothing happen try to create a new profile.

Your profile is being corrupted or deleted. So your OS is using a temporary profile due to which you are getting the error message.

To clear this error you will need to delete the temporary profile and make a new one.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
Select the option of Change settings.
In the System Properties dialog box, go to the Advanced tab.
    Under User Profiles, click Settings.
Select the profile you want to delete under the User Profiles dialog box and click OK.
    After this :
Go to start Menu > Run > type regedit and click on OK.
    Navigate to the following :
    subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
In the left pane of , select one of the S-1-5.(SID) folders with the long number in it.
Right click on the SID that you want remove, and then click Delete.
Exit the editor and restart your windows.

Re: How to resolve the issue of windows logon error

The steps below can resolve the issue.

First log on to Window Vista with a different profile.
Go to Start > Run > type regedit.
Goto to the registry key: Local Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Profile List
    Look for your profiles.
You can use the ProfileImagePath to identify your profile
The key to your profile may have a “.bak” appended to it. There will be another identical key except for the bak. Rename this key and rename yours removing the “.bak”
Change the State property to 0.
Log off and retry logging on with your profile. It should now work.
