CBR: Constant Bit Rate compression ratio of the video is constant throughout the length of the film
VBR: Variable Bit Rate compression rate varies over the length of the film to be lower on the detailed parts (with a field of flowers for example to keep the details) and higher on cetain images simple.

For video, I often have problems with encodings in variable level synchronization on some players (often low-end).
For maximum compatibility, I prefer the CBR.

1, the VBR for video is not a problem but the audio is often the cause of désynchros on some players (plus I'm not sure that the AVI supports VBR audio if c It is the container that you intended to use)
