HP All-in-Ones, Printers, and Cameras - The HP Director Window Does Not Open in Windows XP

Solution one: Open HP Director each time you use it
Follow these steps to use a workaround to open HP Director each time you use the software. These steps must be repeated each time you use HP Director.

NOTE: If you prefer a solution that does not require a workaround each time you open HP Director, skip to Solution two: Update the HP Director software .

    1. Open HP Director using one of the following methods:

From the desktop : On your computer's desktop, look for the HP Director icon, and then double-click it.

From the Windows taskbar : Click Start , click All Programs , click the HP or Hewlett-Packard folder, and then click HP Director .

Although HP Director does not appear to be open , it is open and loaded into the computer's memory, but it does not open in a new window as usual.

    2. Without navigating to another open window, press Alt and Space bar at the same time.

The Shortcut menu displays near the top-left corner of the computer. If the Shortcut menu does not open, repeat steps 1 and 2 until it does.
    3. Select Minimize from the Shortcut menu.

HP Director displays (minimizes) as an item on the taskbar (the row of open software programs that appears at the bottom of the desktop screen).

If HP Director does not minimize, click Minimize again until it does.

    4. Click the HP Director icon on the taskbar. The software opens and functions normally.

NOTE: The HP Director window and icons might appear larger than normal, but the software is functional.

    5. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 every time you use HP Director.

Solution two: Update the HP Director software

HP has released an update titled Critical update to resolve an issue with HP Director after installing Internet Explorer 7 to resolve this issue. Use one of the following methods to install the update to resolve the issue.

Method one: Download and install the HP Director update

Follow these steps exactly to download the HP Director update from the HP Web Site. Some of the following steps might require you to navigate away from this Web page. Consider bookmarking or printing this page for reference.

If you prefer to install the update without downloading anything, skip to the next method.

    1. Click here to go to the HP Software Download Page .

    2. In the Enter a product number text box, type your product model (for example, HP Officejet 7115), and then click Submit ( ) or press Enter .

NOTE: If you are not sure what your product model is, look on the product itself. The model number is usually somewhere on the top or front of the product.

    3. Under Product search results , click your product model.

    4. Click Windows XP under Select your operating system .

    5. Under Update , click Critical update to resolve an issue with HP Director after installing Internet Explorer 7 .

Figure 2: Example of critical update option on the HP Software Download page

NOTE: This update may or may not be available for your product. If it is not available, try the next method.

    6. Thoroughly review the information on the critical update page, and then follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the update.
When the update finishes installing, HP Director functions normally.

Method two: Use the HP Software Update utility to update HP Director

If you did a custom installation when you originally installed the HP software, the HP Update utility might not be installed on your computer. If you cannot find the utility using the following steps, use Method one to install the update.

    1. On the Windows taskbar, Click Start , click All Programs , click the HP or Hewlett-Packard folder, and then click HP Software Update or HP Update .

    2. HP Update opens in a new window.

    3. Click Next , and then follow the on-screen instructions to check for available updates.

    4. HP Update automatically checks for updates available for your product. This process might take a few minutes to complete.

    5. Accept the update titled Critical update to prevent or resolve an HP Director issue .

NOTE: The description for the update is: This update prevents or resolves an issue with HP Director screens which may not function properly after upgrading to Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 .

Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the update.

    Re: HP Director Missing File

I've seen this exact same problem before. What I deduced from that experience is that the Readiris software takes over the redirector function of the HP Director service. The only way we got the HP Director to function again was to:

    1.) Uninstall Readiris
    2.) Uninstall the HP printer
3.) Reinstall the HP printer without installing Readiris

This resulted in the HP director service working properly again, but with the user unable to use the character recognition functionality provided by Readiris.

go to device manager(right click on the my computer icon on the desktop-> properties-> hardware tab-> device manager).

    look 4 the imaging device,

Imaging Device, Other Devices, or entries with DOT4 or 1284.4,IEEE 1284.4 compatible printers in the name. If you see any of those entries, click on the (+) to the left of the entries. If none of the entries is present, remove the HP all-in-one software and then reinstall it.

Locate and click Universal Serial Bus Controller entry
(note:except usb enhanced host controller remove all the other entries like USB

Root Hub,usb host controller, usb composite device.)
remove all USB Root Hub,usb host controller, usb composite device entries (right click on them -> remove or uninstall)

    unplug the usb cable now

    insert the s/w cd

it gives u 2 options uninstall and add device

select add device and follow the instructions.

restart the computer and then check wheather its working or not

however if it doesn't work u need to uninstall the the s/w using 4 levels of uninstallation process.

remove the usb cable from the back of the computer

insert the s/w cd 4 the printer

close the dialogue box that gives u option to uninstall the s/w

    go to my computer

right click on the the cd drive icon

    click open

Select util/ccc/uninstall and double-click Uninstall.bat(click on the uninstall.bat four times 2 complete 4 levels of uninstallation)(it may give u 4 different files uninstall1.bat,uninstall2.bat,uninstall3.bat,uninstall4.bat. dblclick on each of them one by one

now restart your computer(u can remove the cd)

insert the cd click on the install the s/w option, follow the instructions
    choose typical installation option

check the box that says connect the usb later and don't connect the usb cable while installation.

after the installation is done it will instruct u to restart the computer.
now after clicking on the restart button connect the usb cable on the back of the computer.

    your installation is done now.
