To stop updates of windows media player you need to make some changes in registry and so remember, making mistakes while changes in registry can cause serious problem.

To change the registry, follow these steps:

    • Start Registry Editor.
    • Locate the following key in the registry:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft
    • On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
    • Type WindowsMediaPlayer, and then press ENTER.
    • With the WindowsMediaPlayer key selected, on the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
    • Type DisableAutoUpdate, and then press ENTER.
    • On the Edit menu, click Modify.
    • Type 1, and then click OK.
    • Close Registry Editor.

Or you can try this as well:-
    1. In Group Policy Microsoft Management Console (MMC), under Computer Configuration expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then click Windows Media Player.
    2. In the list of available policies, double-click Prevent Automatic Updates.
    3. Click Enabled, and then click OK.
    4. Close Group Policy MMC.

If you are using WMP 9 or higher on Xp system than try this :-

    1. First, click the 'Start' button, and select 'Run'. In the resulting dialog box, type "regedit".
    2. Go to the <b>[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\]</b> key, right-click and click on the "New > Key" to create a new key with the name "WindowsMediaPlayer".
    3. Right-click on the blank area in the right pane and click on "New > DWORD Value" to create a new DWORD value with the name "DisableAutoUpdate".
    4. Right-click on the 'DisableAutoUpdate' DWORD value and click on "Modify".
    5. Enter the value "1" in the text box and click on 'OK'.
    6. Go to the <b>[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\]</b> key, right-click on the blank area in the right pane and click on "New > String Value" to create a new String value with the name "EnableAutoUpgrade".
    7. Right-click on the 'EnableAutoUpgrade' String value and click on "Modify".
    8. Enter the value "no" in the text box and click on 'OK'.
