Replacement for Windows Notepad

hi,
I study economy in the first semester computer science and looking for a replacement for notepad (windows). I know there's BBEdit, my professor just gave us discouraged in the first steps of the "C" programming an auxiliary tool such as BBEdit to use. Is the text editor of Leopard comparable with the Windows Notepad?Any recommendations and suggestions are appreciated.

TextEdit (located by default in Mac OS X) has a few features for formatting, so rather with the WordPad under Winbugs comparable.

Notepad++ is a free (as in "free speech" and also as in "free beer") source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages. Running in the MS Windows environment, its use is governed by GPL Licence.
