Windows Vista Problem: In Search For Answers!

Hello everyone. I am new to this forum - signing up because it seemed like a pretty legitimate site for finding solutions to my tech problems. Hopefully, surely, someone can help me!

    First, my hardware specs:

Gateway GT5656 - Basic stock computer.
    Windows Vista Home Premium
    AMD Athalon 64 X2 6000+ Processor
    3GB DDR2 Duel Channel RAM

The Problem - Earlier on today, I was experiencing problems with my BIOS process, so I think to myself "No problem" - popped the OS disk in, booted from my DVD drive, reformatted my HD and reinstalled my copy of Vista. Shortly after, I shut the machine down for a couple of minutes and turn it back on only to find now that I freeze on the loading screen (where all that shows are the green progress bars). The TRUE problem is the fact that I can't pop my OS disk in because the disk goes through the same process of loading, and when it hits the progress bars, it freezes.
The weird part is the bars continue to move as if everything is working fine - obviously it isn't.

Any ideas, questions, or comments? They would be greatly appreciated!

Try to download active killdisk form the killdisk official website. Run it on your system and try to once wiped off the boot cd and then try to do a fresh install on your system.

Have you tried safe mode? Your best bet before you get any further in the hole would be to do a system restore from the Install DVD. You could try F8 and a last known good Configuration.

In Microsoft Vista, the green bar is often caused by Vista loading and preparing thumbnails. This can also slowdown network connection.
You can take care of this by changing the following setting:

    Explorer
    > Tools
    > Folder Options
    > View
    > Always show icons, never thumbnails

This will tell the computer to open your folders with icons for each file instead of thumbnails which is the problem that causes the slowness.

Note - if your Exporer crashes, you won't be able to open another instance of it untill you kill the explorer process. So, it is a good idea to run every Explorer in its own process, you might want to set the following.

    Explorer
    > Tools
    > Folder Options
    > View
    > Launch folder windows in a separate process
