I think your system is infected with virus. Update your antivirus. If you have old version, then upgrade it and also try another antivirus. If you are running any peer to peer software, then close or completely uninstall it for time being.
Try following:
Restart your computer and sign in to messenger again.
- Close messenger completely from system tray.
- Click on Start button
- Open Control Panel
- Double click Add or Remove Programs
- Select MSN and click Change
- Select Repair in wizard
- Finish complete wizard
If the whole entire computer restarts when you attempt to login to Windows live messenger then it's probably trying to do automatic updates in the background so you can continue to work on whatever you want.
Here's something that might work, try running a check disk and if it finds problems then it will try to fix them.
To do this open MS DOS aka "command prompt" or (click on the start menu and click on run. then type cmd) And type in the following command: chkdsk\r and then type y and restart the computer. After it restarts wait for the operating system screen to finish loading and then it will start.
Warning: might take a couple of hours to check the disk.
After it restarts go directly to disk defragmetor and click on defrag (local Ceven though it says it doesn't need to be done and then restart machine and try to run messenger.
Must be an administrator or be the administrative group to perform these actions!!!
Hope this helps,
lwefers
