cd disk player does not read dvd any more

    Hello,
My disk player HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4164B does not read DVD anymore (- R/+R, RW and original) but it always reads CD (- R/+R, RW and original)?!
Before buying another can any expert tell me what can be the problem. I have WINDOWS XP family edition with SP3. I have already semi updated my disk player. Thank you in advance.

Have you tried updating the firmware for your cd disk player?

The GWA-4164B is a problematic drive. This model is a custom one for OEM customers and is usually only bundled by OEMs like Dell with their computers. It isn't usually sold as a bare drive on the market. It's not typical of the quality of LG drives in general. Unfortunately, it might be the only encounter with LG drives most Dell and other OEM computer owners ever encounter. You will have to Crossflash it to buffalo firmware!

in device manager it would usually say CD-Rom or Standard CD Rom Drives since drivers used is the native CD drivers in windows.

Regarding the DVD problem, if reinstalling the drivers doesn't work, try a firmware update (via the manufacturer's site) and maybe check/change the data and power cables.

If that fails as well, your CD laser might have gone dud. Replacing it is your option, and shouldn't be that expensive.
