please tell me if it is safe and effective to do a defragmentation of the windows registry?

if so, what would be a good software to do it?

I had already tried it on my virtual machine but clearly I do not know if it can cause problems ... no because I use ccleaner and I have a windows XP 64bit, after some time that I did a cleaning of the register with this every so often I will erase the video card drivers nvidia 9500 GT ...
I would not like that with this software, which does not back up files removed, I will delete files that I need ...

Please note, registry cleaning or optimizing is not the same as registry defragging. He asked for registry defrag, and softwares such as registry cleaners shouldnt even be suggested. Most computer experts will advise you to stay away from registry cleaners, as they cause more problems than they solve.

Registry defrag is a safe process, and it will just defrag your registry. Some freeware programs are available for that. You can try the Auslogics Registry Defrag.

TuneUp Utilities can defrag the registry also...

I have never noticed any perfomance boosts after that, however =)
