I would uninstall Norton. It is know to cause problems in Vista an especially Windows Mail. You can use the free Avast if you like. I us it and it has not had any problems yet with Vista.

Norton is very intrusive and in some (most) cases disabling the email integration will not help. You would need to uninstall Norton as per their uninstall tool available from the Symantec site. Use Avast free and make sure you do not enable the email integration (scanning).

Thanks for your help and I have followed your steps. Removed Norton with the removal tool and installed Avast 4.7. I have tried logging on to Winmail and it is still not working. Got a similar report but no error numer this time. Error Report: Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'Marcus' Mail', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F |

Your port settings and server names are correct. Check to make sure that you have "My server requires authentication" checked.

I have checked to make sure that the box is checked and it was. When signing in it goes through the process of the authorization etc and can see that there are messages to download, as soon as it tries to download the messages it just stops and comes up with the error report, same as the one before.

The only thing I can think of to try next is to delete this email account and close Windows Mail. Then, open Windows Mail and setup the account up again as a new one. Perhaps Norton has done it's damage to it and it needs to be discarded and create a new one.
