Unable to play avi files in windows media player 11

Hi, I recently installed Windows Player 11 and try to open an .AVi extension file but it Does not recognized at all. I've checked the file associations and they are correct so that is not the problem. to solve my problem i removed other players from my pc. i think i may have wiped out some files or registry entries that are required. I've been unable to find any listing of required registry entries for Media Player.

    Any help will be appreciated.

Hey, Windows Media Player does not support playing .avi files that were created by using the Microsoft MPEG4v3 codec. Microsoft supports MPEG4v3 files in .asf streaming format only. These files are not supported in an .avi file type. To play the file, you must encode the file again by using the original source in a supported format, such as the .wmv format. To do this, you can use the Windows Media Encoder."

Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD. I assume it doesn't want to use another media player to play the avi files right? Otherwise, it can take a look at VLC Player also.

DivX and XviD are the two most common AVI codecs, which can be downloaded separately. I believe there are also packages out there that combine multiple codecs into a single package, but I cannot verify how well they work.

    Download K-lite codec from here

As suggested by Glenny, download the DivX or XviD codec, and the avi files will play with the WMP. Or, you can try other players like VLC, or GOM player, that have their own codecs.
