    hi,
Reinstall your sound card drivers. You may download the latest version from the maker of your sound card. Turn down Hardware Acceleration. To do this go to your Control Panel | Multimedia | Audio | Advanced Properties or Control Panel | Sound and Multimedia or Sound and Audio Devices | Audio | Sound Playback | Advanced. Move the slider down a bit.
Make sure WMP is not muted. Play | Volume. WMP has it's own Mute controls.
Run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Start | Run | Type dxdiag and view the Sound Tab.
Make sure the correct output device is selected under Tools | Options | Devices | Speakers.

Test whether the sound card drivers are working correctly
To do this in Windows XP, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click System, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
Under Sound, video and games controller, make sure that the sound card is listed.
Right-click the sound card, and then click Update Driver to install the latest driver.
Visit the Web site of the sound card manufacturer to determine whether a newer version of the driver is available to download.

    Verify software volume control settings:

First verify you see a small sound icon in the systray (generally at the bottom right hand corner of your screen). If this icon is missing follow the below section.

    • Open the Control panel
    • Open the "Sounds and Audio Devices" icon.
    • Verify the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" checkbox is checked. If this option is not available or is grayed out, skip to the next section of this document.
    • If you were able to check this box, click ok and close out of this window and the Control Panel.
    • Double-click the sound icon in the systray and verify that all the sound volumes are mid-way or higher.
