How to stop .avi files from locking up in Windows Explorer

If you’ve downloaded a corrupt .avi file in Windows then you may have noticed that if you try to delete, rename or move it that explorer complains that the file is in use. This is because Windows is trying to load the whole file to generate a preview image for you. You can turn this preview off by doing the following:

    • Open the ‘Run’ dialog box from the start menu (Start->Run or press the Windows and r keys together):
    • To remove image preview, type and hit enter regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
    • To readd image preview, type and hit enter regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
    • To remove media preview, type and hit enter regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
    • To readd media preview, type and hit enter regsvr32 shmedia.dll

    Re: windows media player problems

    • Download a copy of ShellExView
    • Find the “Avi Property Handler” extention name
    • Right click on it and select Disable Selected Item (F7)

This does fix the problem, however it just disables the issue, the method below should totally fix it.
For more advanced users you could try the following:

    Go to Start, then Run.
Type in regedit and press enter.
    Then navigate to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\
If there is a key in there with the name DivX in it, delete it.
    Now navigate to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\
If there is a key called PropertyHandler in there, delete the value (Default). Then it will appear as an empty value. Finally close the registry editor and reboot the computer.
Now .avi files should not cause explorer.exe to crash anymore.

It may be because you're playing media files that don't work with your computer. I had that problem with Video Files. But I changed my computer so I don't see that anymore. If it shows the blue screen, then your computer can't play that video format, such as AVI, Video File, MPEG, etc. you need to install codec pack for it
