no master disc to boot from

Hello and Good Evening!

I really hope that someone can help me! I have Vista installed for quite some time now and decided that it is time for some upgrades. So I installed some additional RAM and also one of my former external hard drives. Everything was fine until I ran the updates of the day (seems like there is at least one a day) and had to restart the PC. Now it tells me that there is no master disc to boot from. I tried to boot from the installation disk but it won't even let me do that! I don't care much about the data on the PC since I backed everything up prior to the upgrades but how do I get the darn thing running again?
