Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 is the third development milestone and first beta release of Firefox 3.1, the upcoming version of the Firefox web browser. While the release is stable, it is intended for Web developers and members of our testing community for early evaluation and feedback. Users of the latest released version of Firefox should not expect their add-ons to work properly with this beta.

What's new in Firefox 3.1 Beta 1
Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 is based on the Gecko 1.9.1 rendering platform, which has been under development for the past 6 months. Gecko 1.9.1 is an incremental release on the previous version with significant changes to improve web compatibility, performance, and ease of use:
- Web standards improvements in the Gecko layout engine
- Added support for CSS 2.1 and CSS 3 properties
- A new tab-switching shortcut that shows previews of the tab you're switching to
- Improved control over the Smart Location Bar using special characters to restrict your search
- Support for new web technologies such as the <video> and <audio> elements, the W3C Geolocation API, JavaScript query selectors, web worker threads, SVG transforms and offline applications.

Please note that Linux distributors may provide packages for your distribution which have different requirements.
Firefox will not run at all without the following libraries or packages:
- GTK+ 2.10 or higher
- GLib 2.12 or higher
- Pango 1.14 or higher
- X.Org 1.0 or higher
- For optimal functionality, we recommend the following libraries or packages:
- NetworkManager 0.7 or higher
- DBus 1.0 or higher
- HAL 0.5.8 or higher
- GNOME 2.16 or higher
Installation
Please note that installing Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 will overwrite your existing installation of Firefox. You won’t lose any of your bookmarks or browsing history, but some of your extensions and other add-ons might not work until updates for them are made available.
Uninstallation
You can remove Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 through the Control Panel in the Start Menu on Windows, by removing the Firefox application on OS X, or by removing the firefox folder on Linux.
Removing Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 won’t remove your bookmarks, web browsing history, extensions or other add-ons. This data is stored in your profile folder, which is located in one of the following locations depending on your operating system:
- Windows Vista: Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox
- Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003: Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox
- Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox
- Linux and Unix systems: ~/.mozilla/firefox
Extensions And Themes
Extensions installed under Firefox 3 may be incompatible and/or require updates to work with Firefox 3.1 Beta 1. Please report any issues to the maintainer of the extension. When you install Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 all of your Extensions and Themes will be disabled until Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 determines that either a) they are compatible with the Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 release or b) there are newer versions available that are compatible.
