    Immediate logoff after logon

Does anyone know why windows 2003 would log off a user right after logon? I
thought it may be due to a corrupt profile, so I logged into it for the first
time and it happened to me. It only happens via console or RDP. Safe mode is
fine. I dont see anything in the event viewer other than some apps that are
being shutdown in mid stream due to the logoff. I am having the user check
any programs or updates that were installed to compare this to when the
server started showing issues. I also checked a chkdisk.

    Any ideas?

This usually happens when the system is unable to locate userinit.exe,
e.g. when the system drive letter changes after a disk cloning operation.
However, it then persists both in Normal and in Safe Mode. Try
checking the system drive letter by booting in Normal Mode and
    running this command:
    psexec \\YourServer cmd
    (psexec.exe: www.sysinternals.com)

    Re: Immediate logoff after logon

Interesting. Thanks. I passed this down. I will also mention that apparently
it happened a few months ago after updates were dl and installed, the system
possibly ran out of space at the time. Maybe a bad/partial install of one?
who knows. I guess files were compressed and removed via microsofts built-in
utility.. Could compression be a possible cause here, now if the wrong files
were del i can see that being an issue which is also in the link...

    RE: Immediate logoff after logon

    Hi,

We rolled out a new Legal Notice using a registry file, and 2 of our older
servers which had the windows folder as c:\WINNT had the same problem. Check
using remote registry that the userinit.exe path is correct as the article
    mentioned.
Worked for us (it was a dumb mistake).

    Regards
    Ian
