| moving physical win2k3 32 bit drive to vmware on a 64bit host mach
hi guys, i've recently purchased a new server, a dual amd 64 bit machine. i have this win2k3 box that i want to image and move onto it. i tried a direct disk clone using backup utilities but no luck - it would BSOD. so then i tried installing XP on the amd, installing vmware workstation and trying. same thing, it BSODs. is there any way at all to get this up and running? i have tons of settings on the win2k3 machine, primarily exchange and dns services, that i simply just can't replicate - it took me ages to build and perfect it and no way am i restarting it all!! is there some easy migration utility otherwise that'll copy exactly all my exchang e/ webserver / dns / CA etc etc settings if i just do a fresh install of win2k3 64bit edition? what are my options? thanks! |

| RE: moving physical win2k3 32 bit drive to vmware on a 64bit host mach
Hello, Thank you for your post. Regarding the BSOD problem: ======================== The root cause could probably be the incompatible HAL or the drivers. Please note that if the machines have very different hardware from each other, you should not directly image or back up the hard disk and apply it to a new one. This is because they have different drivers and even different HAL. To locate the exact problem of the blue screen, we need to analyze the crash dump file. To trouble shoot this problem efficiently, I suggest that you speak directly with a Microsoft Support Professional so that the crash dump can be analyzed. You may need to migrate one service or application at one time, by using different migration methods accordingly.
