Thread: MMC Snap-in's

  1. #1
    Vicky Guest

    MMC Snap-in's

Like in win 2000/2003 we could install Adminpak.MSI / suptools.msi or
resource kit to have additional snap-ins' & tools installed on the server

what is it like in win 2008?

I created a win 2008 server core & installed a DHCP server on it.
To be able to manage it thru remote MMC running on a win2008/Vista machine I
could not find the DHCP MMC snap-in.

Please let me know how to do install all these additional snap-ins & tools
    on a system

    RE: MMC Snap-in's

I even installed the Hyper V role on my server core. Now do I also need to
install the same on win2008 GUI server server so that I can use the
management tools to manage the hyper v on my win 2008 server core?

    Hello Vicky,

    2008 server:
From the features install the "Remote server administration tools". Choose
all or only the ones you need

    Vista:
    Download and install RSAT:

    RSAT 32bit:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

    RSAT 64bit:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Then open Control Panele, Programs and features, Turn windows features on
or off, check the tools you like under "Remote Server Administration Tools"

    RE: MMC Snap-in's

    Hello Vicky,

    2008:
Hyper-V tools are also to install via features, RSAT, Role administration
    tools, Hyper-V

    Vista:
Hyper-V is included in the RSAT for Vista or maybe you have to check with
windows update for the latest patches.

    Re: MMC Snap-in's

    Dear Meinolf,

The RSAT tools just are for VistaSP1 !!!

Just wish to know if there are similar tools [RSAT] those could be installed
on a windows 2008 [GUI] based server which would allow me to snap in
different MMC snapin's for remote management, without requiring to install
    those services on the server.
I may just have a 2008 Member server from which I would like to manage
using MMC different services in my domain such as ADS DC, DNS, DHCP etc.
    How can this be done?

    Re: MMC Snap-in's

    Hello Vicky,

You have to register the schmmgmt.dll with "regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll" on the
run line. After that the Active Directory Schema is available for selection
    via mmc snapin.
