ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

    Hello,

I am attempting to upgrade a W2k domain to W2k3.

I've followed all of the instructions in MS KB article 325379 for this
upgrade. All W2k servers are at SP4, no apparent replication issues,
    etc.

When I go to run ADPREP /FORESTPREP from our schema master, the process
gets all the way to sch23.ldf. Then I get the following failure message:

    *** COMMAND LINE OUTPUT ***
Add error on line 75: Busy
The server side error is "The directory service is busy."
    9 entries modified successfully.
An error has occurred in the program
ERROR: Import from file C:\WINNT\system32\sch23.ldf failed. Error file
    is saved in ldif.err.23.
    *** COMMAND LINE OUTPUT ***

Any input about this would be appreciated. Specifically, I'd like to
    know:

    (a) The cause

    (b) Is it recommended to restore system state for this DC from tape?

    (c) Is it OK to attempt ADPREP /forestprep again with no remedial steps?

    (d) If "busy" message is accurate, how does one verify that DS is *not*
busy prior to running ADPREP /forestprep again?

    Many Thanks,
    Tom W.

    Hello MWave,

Try to copy the disk content to the harddisk and run again. Seems like stated
in the error that it can not read the sch23.ldf file. Or check if you have
    another disk.

    Best regards

RE: ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

    Hi,

    Thanks for posting here.

From your description, I understand the error message " The directory
service is busy" occurs when running Forest prep on Schema DC with Windows
server 2000 SP4. Based on my research, this symptom could be caused by the
following factors. Please try the steps following each factor and test the
    result.

1)We don't have the enough right to modify Schema.

Please check the Registry for the "Schema Update Allowed" value is set to
    1. If not, please modify this value to 1. You can refer to the following
    article to perform this step.

Modification Required to Allow Write Operations to Schema For additional
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216060/EN-US/

NOTE: As serious problems might occur if you modify the registry
incorrectly, please refer to the following KB article to back up the
    registry before you modify it:

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/en-us

2)The other servers may affect the behavior of 'Forestprep'. Especially,
    Exchange server is involved.

If Exchange server is involved, please refer to following articles to
    assign the corresponding permissions.

Windows Server 2003 adprep /forestprep command causes mangled attributes in
Windows 2000 forests that contain Exchange 2000 servers

Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/274737/en-us

    3) Domain replication problem.

To solve this kind of issue, the MSP report log is required. Please help me
collect MSP report for further assistance.

    About MPS report:
    -----------------------

computer situation. This tool facilitates the gathering of critical system
and logging information used in troubleshooting support issues. After this
tool stops automatically, navigate to the folder "
%SYSTEMROOT%\MPSReports\DirSvc\Logs " and please send all these files back
    to me.

You can get this tool from the link:

Microsoft Product Support's Reporting Tools (MPSRPT_DirSvc.EXE)
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...C7C-7CA5-408F-
    88B7-F9C79B7306C0&displaylang=en

You can also get more information about how to use it in the same page (the
    readme.txt)

Please also send me the adprep log under C:\WINNT\system32\debug\adprep\logs

Please send the MPS report CAB file and ADprep log to
    v-morche@microsoft.com.

After receiving the log files, I will do further research and get back to
you with my suggestion as soon as possible.

Moreover, if possible, please transfer Schema role to other DC and run
'forestprep' on it to test the result. About how to transfer FSMO, please
    refer to:

How to view and transfer FSMO roles in the graphical user interface
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255690

As for the recommended way to restore system state of DC , please refer to
    the following article:

How To Use the Backup Program to Back Up and Restore the System State in
    Windows 2000
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/240363/en-us

    As for the question ( C ) and ( D ), we'd better to remove this error
firstly. However, before performing any steps, please backup the system as
the above KB article suggests. Thanks.

Hope this helps. Have a nice day!

    Hi,
    Thanks for posting here.
From your description, I understand the error message " The directory
service is busy" occurs when running Forest prep on Schema DC with
    Windows
server 2000 SP4. Based on my research, this symptom could be caused by
    the
following factors. Please try the steps following each factor and test
    the
    result.
1)We don't have the enough right to modify Schema.
Please check the Registry for the "Schema Update Allowed" value is set

    following
    article to perform this step.
Modification Required to Allow Write Operations to Schema For

NOTE: As serious problems might occur if you modify the registry

    registry before you modify it:
How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/en-us

I feel fairly confident that the schema rights are not the issue. I
followed the steps in KB #285172 for enabling schema updates via MMC.
I'm hesitant to use the registry method, although I did verify that
the key referenced does not exist in our current registry. Do you
think this would have add'l impact or is the MMC enabling sufficient?

2)The other servers may affect the behavior of 'Forestprep'.
    Especially, Exchange server is involved.
If Exchange server is involved, please refer to following articles to
    assign the corresponding permissions.

Windows Server 2003 adprep /forestprep command causes mangled

How to Verify That ForestPrep and DomainPrep Completed Successfully in
Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/274737/en-us

I thoroughly read thru KB #325379 before attempting this. Followed the
Exchange 2000 "inetorgpersonfix.ldf" instructions to the letter and
    ran the script without error.

Also, our Exchange 2000 server is our schema operations master along
    with several other FSMO roles.

I will definitely review KB #274737 that you mention above.

    3) Domain replication problem.

These are attached in my direct response.

RE: ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

    Hi,

    Thanks for the reply.

Please note the MSP report I requested is MPSRPT_DirSvc, not
Exchange_MPSReports. Could you please download it again and collect
MPSRPT_DirSvc log for me? Thanks in advance.

You can get this tool from the link:

Microsoft Product Support's Reporting Tools (MPSRPT_DirSvc.EXE)
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...C7C-7CA5-408F-
    88B7-F9C79B7306C0&displaylang=en

It indicates in ADPrep.log that the error occurs when extending domain
schema and the corresponding log file has been saved in the
    C:\WINNT\system32\debug\adprep\logs\20080517194507 directory. For further
assistance, please also attach this log. Meanwhile, Prep Forest requires
that the user running this procedure have Enterprise Admins or Domain
Admins credentials for the forest root domain. Please ensure the user
running forestprep has the requested permission.

Additionally, when you reply to me, please also post your email in
newsgroup so that other customers can benefit from our intervention.
    Thanks for your cooperation.

Re: ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

    Hi Tom,

    Thanks for your time.

I check the MPS report. I found everything is ok on network, replication,
Ladp query etc. After doing further research, I found other customers
encounter the same issue when their Exchange serves reside on domain
    server.

    Analysis:
    =======

When running 'Forest prep', Windows will use Ladp protocol to update AD
database. However, meanwhile, Exchange server may open lots of ports to
connect Ladp port on DC to do some operations, such as querying, update
information from AD database. In conclusion, system is too busy to echo the
Ladp operation of "forestprep" and the error message "Directory Service Is
    Busy" comes out.

So, I suggest transferring Schema role to other DC which is not running
Exchange server, then run 'forest prep' on that DC to test the result.
Addtionally, I noticed '0xc007056b' error in application log, which is
related to Exchange server. I recommend you also post this thread in the
below Exchange queues to confirm if domain server running Exchange may lead
to "Directory Service Is Busy" problem when running "forest prep" command.

    microsoft.public.exchange.admin
    microsoft.public.exchange.applications

The engineers and communities there are more specialized in Exchange field
and will assist you more professionally.

About how to transfer FSMO, please refer to:

How to view and transfer FSMO roles in the graphical user interface
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255690

    Hope this helps.

Re: ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

    Hi Tom,

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

As the KB article said, we cannot authoritatively restore the schema.
However, when we run forestprep next time, system will check the current
schame version and upgrade schema version from this basis.

In order to restore Schema version to the 13 (Windows 2000 level), we have
to restore all DCs in the network at the same time. It may lead to other
data loss. So I suggest directly upgrading to the 30 or 31 version(Windows
    2003 or Windows 2003 R2).

<Assuming that we proceed with ADPREP /FORESTPREP again, is it recommended
to use the W2k3 R2 disc #1 version or should I use the version on disc #2?>

    {Morgan}:

Yes, I haven't noticed you upgrade to Windows server 2003 R2. Previously, I
thought you planed to upgrade to Windows server 2003. If in this way,
    please try the following steps:

Run the schema update from to windows 2003 Standard edition firstly by the
first disk of Windows server 2003 R2, then further update it using the
second disk of Windows server 2003 R2.

    For your reference:
    =================

Windows Server 2003 R2 comes on two installation disks. Installation disk 1
contains a slip-streamed version of Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1
(SP1). Installation disk 2 contains the Windows Server 2003 R2 files. If
the computer has Windows Server 2003 SP1 installed, you may only have to
run installation disk 2 to upgrade to Windows Server 2003 R2.

Error message when you run the Active Directory Installation Wizard: "The
version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not
compatible with the version of Active Directory on this computer"

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917385

If this method doesn't work, please consider the steps in my last reply.

Thanks and have a good day!

Re: ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

    Morgan,

Thanks so much for all of your help. You've really cleared things up
    for us a great deal!

I am wondering about one last item. We've discussed transferring
Schema Master FSMO role from Exchange to another DC. Do you recommend
that we try ADPREP /forestprep again with Exchange remaining the
Schema Master? Or is it preferable to attempt the FSMO transfer
    *before* running ADPREP again?

I feel that there is some level of risk involved with either method
and await your input before proceeding.

    Many Thanks,
    Tom W.

    Morgan,

What do you think of the following idea:

Stopping all Exchange services prior to running ADPREP /forestprep?
This might mitigate the "directory service busy" hangup.

Let me know if this question is better posed on the Exchange groups.

Re: ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

    Hi Tom,

    You are welcome.

You can run ADPREP /forestprep again with Exchange remaining on the Schema
Master by the first disk of Windows server 2003 R2 firstly and test the
    result.

If this method doesn't work, before transferring Schema role to other DC,
you'd better post in Exchange queue to further isolate problem. I am not
sure if Schema role transfer will affect Exchange operation.

    Thanks.

Re: ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

    Hi Morgan,

    OK, more to report now:

I successfully moved all of the FSMO roles do a different DC at the same
site. adprep /forestprep run successfully from 2k3 disc #1 and then
disc #2. So I am not at schema level 31 according to the Windows
    registry on all DCs.

I am ready to run adprep /domainprep, but I am having trouble verifying
all of the MS-recommended items to verify schema level. Specifically,
    these are:

    b. The CN=Windows2003Update,
    CN=ForestUpdates,CN=Configuration,DC=forest_root_domain or
    CN=Operations,CN=DomainUpdates,CN=System,DC=forest_root_domain and the
operations GUIDs under it have replicated in.

    c. Search for new schema classes, objects, attributes, or other changes
that adprep /forestprep adds, such as inetOrgPerson. View the SchXX.ldf
files (where XX is a number between 14 and 30) in the %systemroot%
\System32 folder to determine what objects and attributes there should
be. For example, inetOrgPerson is defined in Sch18.ldf.

Where does one go to verify these items? It is not at all clear from the
MS-KB article (#325379). Is this info in Schema console?

    Thanks!
    Tom W.

Re: ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

    Hi,

< Where does one go to verify these items?>

    {Morgan}:

You can use Adsiedit.msc to view these objects and their values, which is
included in support tools. You can download it at or install it from
    installation disk 1 :

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...B78-8BE1-4E81-
    B3BE-4E7AC4F0912D&displaylang=en

You can also simply check the schema version by using the Adsiedit.exe
utility or the Ldp.exe utility. You can view the objectVersion attribute in
the properties of the cn=schema,cn=configuration,dc=<domain> partition. The
value of the objectVersion attribute are in decimal.

Schema Version ObjectVersion values and corresponding operating system
    support level

    o 13=Microsoft Windows 2000
o 30=Original release version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
    o 31=Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2

Note: The Adsiedit.exe utility and the Ldp.exe utility are included with
Windows Server 2003 R2 support tools. To install support tools, run
Suptools.msi from the \Support\Tools folder on installation disk 1.

    Hope this helps.
