ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

Hello,

I am attempting to upgrade a W2k domain to W2k3.

I've followed all of the instructions in MS KB article 325379 for this
upgrade. All W2k servers are at SP4, no apparent replication issues,
etc.

When I go to run ADPREP /FORESTPREP from our schema master, the process
gets all the way to sch23.ldf. Then I get the following failure message:

Add error on line 75: Busy
The server side error is "The directory service is busy."
9 entries modified successfully.
An error has occurred in the program
ERROR: Import from file C:\WINNT\system32\sch23.ldf failed. Error file
is saved in ldif.err.23.

Any input about this would be appreciated. Specifically, I'd like to
know:

(a) The cause

(b) Is it recommended to restore system state for this DC from tape?

(c) Is it OK to attempt ADPREP /forestprep again with no remedial steps?

(d) If "busy" message is accurate, how does one verify that DS is *not*
busy prior to running ADPREP /forestprep again?

Hello MWave,

Try to copy the disk content to the harddisk and run again. Seems like stated
in the error that it can not read the sch23.ldf file. Or check if you have
another disk.

From your description, I understand the error message " The directory
service is busy" occurs when running Forest prep on Schema DC with Windows
server 2000 SP4. Based on my research, this symptom could be caused by the
following factors. Please try the steps following each factor and test the
result.

1)We don't have the enough right to modify Schema.

Please check the Registry for the "Schema Update Allowed" value is set to
1. If not, please modify this value to 1. You can refer to the following
article to perform this step.

NOTE: As serious problems might occur if you modify the registry

Exchange server is involved.

3) Domain replication problem.

I feel fairly confident that the schema rights are not the issue. I
followed the steps in KB #285172 for enabling schema updates via MMC.
I'm hesitant to use the registry method, although I did verify that
the key referenced does not exist in our current registry. Do you
think this would have add'l impact or is the MMC enabling sufficient?

I thoroughly read thru KB #325379 before attempting this. Followed the
Exchange 2000 "inetorgpersonfix.ldf" instructions to the letter and
ran the script without error.

Also, our Exchange 2000 server is our schema operations master along
with several other FSMO roles.

I will definitely review KB #274737 that you mention above.



3) Domain replication problem.
To solve this kind of issue, the MSP report log is required. Please
help me

It indicates in ADPrep.log that the error occurs when extending domain
schema and the corresponding log file has been saved in the
C:\WINNT\system32\debug\adprep\logs\20080517194507 directory. For further
assistance, please also attach this log. Meanwhile, Prep Forest requires
that the user running this procedure have Enterprise Admins or Domain
Admins credentials for the forest root domain. Please ensure the user
running forestprep has the requested permission.

Additionally, when you reply to me, please also post your email in
newsgroup so that other customers can benefit from our intervention.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your time.

I check the MPS report. I found everything is ok on network, replication,
Ladp query etc. After doing further research, I found other customers
encounter the same issue when their Exchange serves reside on domain
server.

Analysis:
=======

When running 'Forest prep', Windows will use Ladp protocol to update AD
database. However, meanwhile, Exchange server may open lots of ports to
connect Ladp port on DC to do some operations, such as querying, update
information from AD database. In conclusion, system is too busy to echo the
Ladp operation of "forestprep" and the error message "Directory Service Is
Busy" comes out.

So, I suggest transferring Schema role to other DC which is not running
Exchange server, then run 'forest prep' on that DC to test the result.
Addtionally, I noticed '0xc007056b' error in application log, which is
related to Exchange server. I recommend you also post this thread in the
below Exchange queues to confirm if domain server running Exchange may lead
to "Directory Service Is Busy" problem when running "forest prep" command.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

As the KB article said, we cannot authoritatively restore the schema.
However, when we run forestprep next time, system will check the current
schame version and upgrade schema version from this basis.

In order to restore Schema version to the 13 (Windows 2000 level), we have
to restore all DCs in the network at the same time. It may lead to other
data loss. So I suggest directly upgrading to the 30 or 31 version(Windows
2003 or Windows 2003 R2).

<Assuming that we proceed with ADPREP /FORESTPREP again, is it recommended
to use the W2k3 R2 disc #1 version or should I use the version on disc #2?>

I am wondering about one last item. We've discussed transferring
Schema Master FSMO role from Exchange to another DC. Do you recommend
that we try ADPREP /forestprep again with Exchange remaining the
Schema Master? Or is it preferable to attempt the FSMO transfer
*before* running ADPREP again?

I feel that there is some level of risk involved with either method
and await your input before proceeding.

Stopping all Exchange services prior to running ADPREP /forestprep?
This might mitigate the "directory service busy" hangup.

You are welcome.

You can run ADPREP /forestprep again with Exchange remaining on the Schema
Master by the first disk of Windows server 2003 R2 firstly and test the
result.

If this method doesn't work, before transferring Schema role to other DC,
you'd better post in Exchange queue to further isolate problem. I am not
sure if Schema role transfer will affect Exchange operation.

Hi Morgan,

OK, more to report now:

I successfully moved all of the FSMO roles do a different DC at the same
site. adprep /forestprep run successfully from 2k3 disc #1 and then
disc #2. So I am not at schema level 31 according to the Windows
registry on all DCs.

I am ready to run adprep /domainprep, but I am having trouble verifying
all of the MS-recommended items to verify schema level. Specifically,
these are:

b. The CN=Windows2003Update,
CN=ForestUpdates,CN=Configuration,DC=forest_root_domain or
CN=Operations,CN=DomainUpdates,CN=System,DC=forest_root_domain and the
operations GUIDs under it have replicated in.

c. Search for new schema classes, objects, attributes, or other changes
that adprep /forestprep adds, such as inetOrgPerson. View the SchXX.ldf
files (where XX is a number between 14 and 30) in the %systemroot%
\System32 folder to determine what objects and attributes there should
be. For example, inetOrgPerson is defined in Sch18.ldf.


Where does one go to verify these items? It is not at all clear from the
MS-KB article (#325379). Is this info in Schema console?

included in support tools. You can download it at or install it from

Note: The Adsiedit.exe utility and the Ldp.exe utility are included with
Windows Server 2003 R2 support tools. To install support tools, run
Suptools.msi from the \Support\Tools folder on installation disk 1.
