Thread: ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

    Re: ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

    Hi Morgan,

    Thanks, I'll follow these steps as well.

    Is it also a good indicator that the Schema Version in the registry is
    listed as level 31? Specifically, this is contained on DCs as:

    \HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters\Schema Version

    Will keep you posted and thanks for all of your good advice!

    Re: ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

    Hi,

    Yes, you can look at the registry value to check the current Schema Version.

    In fact, we have three methods to view Schema version:

    1>Registry subkey on a domain controller at :

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters

    2> ObjectVersion attribute

    You can also check the schema level by using the Adsiedit or the Ldp to
    view the objectVersion attribute on the properties of the
    cn=schema,cn=configuration,dc=<domain> partition.

    Note: The value of the schema version registry subkey and the objectVersion
    attribute are in decimal.

    Values:

    13=Microsoft Windows 2000
    30=Original release version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft
    Windows Server 2003 SP1
    31=Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2
    44=Windows Server 2008

    3>Command line

    Alternatively, you can simply run Schupgr.exe on the computer you want to
    check. You may receive an error message, but the third line does report the
    current version number.

    Hope this helps. For any update on your side, we are appreciated to been
    posted. Thanks.

    Re: ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

    Hi Morgan,

    I ran schupgr and got the following response. Did this actually
    attempt to upgrade the schema again? Is there risk of potential damage
    by the DC attempting to upgrade itself like this?

    Also, under what circumstances is it appropriate to use schupgr.exe to
    upgrade the schema?

    D:\>schupgr
    Opened Connection to PC110
    SSPI Bind succeeded
    Current Schema Version is 31
    Upgrading schema to version 31
    Schema has already been changed in another DC in this enterprise and
    the changes
    are made to this DC. Rerun setup to upgrade this DC

    Thanks,
    Tom W.

    Re: ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

    Hi,

    <Did this actually attempt to upgrade the schema again?>

    No, when you running Schupgr.exe, it just reports to you the current schema
    version.

    Form the output of Schupgr.exe, it indicates the current schema of the
    Windows server running this command is Windows server 2003 R2.

    <Is there risk of potential damageby the DC attempting to upgrade itself
    like this?
    under what circumstances is it appropriate to use schupgr.exe to upgrade
    the schema?>

    Normally, we use 'adprep /forestprep' command to extend schema, and 'adprep
    /forestprep' command will use the Schupgr.exe utility to implement schema
    additions. However, besides
    Upgrading schema, 'adprep /forestprep' also performs other more other 40
    operations, such as updating ACL, security descriptors etc, which
    Schupgr.exe can't realize.

    More information about ' the adprep /forestprep command', please refer to:

    Operations that are performed by the Adprep.exe utility when you add a
    Windows Server 2003 domain controller to a Windows 2000 domain or forest
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309628/en-us

    So, typically, we do not respectively use Schupgr.exe to extend schema.
    However, when we upgrade Windows 2000 servers from Bata to RC version, we
    use schupgr.exe to update schema version. More information, please refer to:

    HOW TO: Upgrade the Schema to Upgrade Domain Controllers to Released
    Version of Windows 2000

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/240427/en-us

    Hope this helps.

    Re: ADPREP /forestprep failure - directory service busy

    Hi Morgan,

    Thanks for keeping up!

    Actually, all of the forestprep, domainprep, and gpprep steps have
    completed properly. I have joined my Windows 2003 Server x64 system to
    our domain successfully.

    However, I now have a new problem. Several reboots after joining the
    domain, the "Network Connections" service will no longer start on this
    machine. I can't start it manually, it times out with an error code of
    1053. All network interfaces are gone from "My Network Places"
    properties.

    I've read several articles concerning 3rd-party management drivers. Do
    you have any suggestions? I certainly can't go live with this new
    server until I am convinced that the OS is reliable.

    Thanks Again,
    Tom W.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the reply.

    Because we have resolved the original issue, for this new issue, in order
    to concentrate fully on each of these issues and provide clarity for others
    that may be following here, we ask that you post them as separate threads.
    Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Here, I am also glad to provide my general suggestion here for your
    reference:

    As for error code '1053', you can read the following articles that would be
    helpful to troubleshoot this issue:

    You receive an "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or
    control request in a timely fashion" error message when a service that uses
    the local system account tries to start on a Windows Server 2003-based
    computer

    --->Hi Morgan,
    --->Thanks for keeping up!
    --->Actually, all of the forestprep, domainprep, and gpprep steps have
    --->completed properly. I have joined my Windows 2003 Server x64 system to
    --->our domain successfully.
    --->However, I now have a new problem. Several reboots after joining the
    --->domain, the "Network Connections" service will no longer start on this
    --->machine. I can't start it manually, it times out with an error code of
    --->1053. All network interfaces are gone from "My Network Places"
    --->properties.
    --->I've read several articles concerning 3rd-party management drivers. Do
    --->you have any suggestions? I certainly can't go live with this new
    --->server until I am convinced that the OS is reliable.
    --->Thanks Again,
    --->Tom W.
