| Roaming profile problem
background: Server - windows server 2003 standard Roaming profiles Folder redirection (my documents, desktop, application data) Problem: The roaming profiles work fine except that the outlook express e-mail and the desktop background do not follow user. With the e-mail the account is set up and the user can recieve e-mail but the stored messages and folders do not roam. The desktop background is a picture that is stored in the users my documents folder and when i look at desktop properties the picture is selected but is not shown on the desktop. Any help would be much appreciated thanks Gazza |

It isn't suitable - if you don't have Exchange, or use webmail only, I recommend you don't let your users roam from computer to computer. > and the desktop background do not follow user. I had the same problem when trying to setup a profile template. Which is basically the same idea.... the user gets their default profile from a profile located on the server. I could never find an answer to that, either here or by doing a Google search. BUT... Microsoft documentation says this "does work". ok got the e-mail thing working (just changed the store folder to a hidden folder in my documents and it works a treat.) As for the background i can reset it if i choose another background and then re choose the original and click apply but i cant expect the users to have to reset their background every time they log onto a computer. Here's another Me To for the Desktop Picture issue. If you right click properties, you see the appropriate picture is highlighted, and it appears if you click on the apply button. There must be a way to make that happen. I've had the desktop picture thing workintermittenly...sometimes it works, sometimes not. Seems to work more consistently with Win2K machines than XP. You definitely need to be redirecting My Documents (and Application Data, and Desktop) to the server if you want roaming profiles to work right.....and OE won't work then. OE is not a corporate mail client....even Outlook with PST files would be a better choice (and I am *not* a fan of PST files!) > > As for the background i can reset it if i choose another background > and then re choose the original and click apply but i cant expect the > users to have to reset their background every time they log onto a > computer. Any event log errors, as asked? Is this controlled via group policy? Active desktop enabled/disabled? I disable desktop wallpaper most of the time. I'm mean. > > "Lanwench [MVP - Exchange]" wrote: > >> Gazza <Gazza@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: >>> background: >>> Server - windows server 2003 standard >>> Roaming profiles >>> Folder redirection (my documents, desktop, application data) >>> >>> Problem: >>> The roaming profiles work fine except that the outlook express >> >> It won't.....OE stores its data in the LocalSettings folder & is not >> meant to work in this kind of environment.
