Migration scenario - Windows 2000 to Windows 2008 Single domain name

    Hi All,

I have a Windows 2000 Single Domain Name with Exchange 2000.

I want to migrate to Windows 2008 and Exchange 2007sp1.

I read that Single Domain Name is not recommanded and renaming a
domain is not possible with Exchange 2000 and 2007. What is the best
    scenario?

Migrate to a new domain? or

inplace upgrade? that means upgrade domain to 2003 then Exhange to
2003. Rename domain. And migrate Exchange to 2007 and then the
    domain to 2008. :-(

    Thanks all for your input

RE: Migration scenario - Windows 2000 to Windows 2008 Single domain name

    Hi,

    Thanks for your post here.

As you said, it is not recommended to use single-label DNS domain names for
there is no business or technical reason to create them. A domain renaming
is necessary for the better compatibility with the further products when
your business grows and your needs change.

    - For Exchange Server 2007 is x64 based application, in-place upgrade from
Exchange Server 2000 or Exchange Server 2003 to Exchange Server 2007 is NOT
    supported.
    - In a Windows 2000 Server forest, you cannot rename domains after the
forest structure is in place without moving domain contents or recreating
    them.

So the most effective practice should be to build a domain with new domain
name in a new forest and create a new organization in Exchange Server 2007.
Then perform a migration from Windows Server 2000 Active Directory Domain
Service to Windows Server 2008 Active Directory Domain Service, also a
migration from Exchange Server 2000 to Exchange Server 2007 new
    organization.

Also this is a migration of Exchange server issue, you can try to post in
Exchange Server Newsgroup to get more information from support engineers
who have a good knowledge of them.

    Hope it helps.
