| Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 in-place upgrade to Server 2003 withAD
Will I run into any problems and has anyone tried it, to do an in- place upgrade to Server 2003 R2 from a single Windows Storage 2003 R2 machine running AD. Storage Server is not listed on Microsoft's Upgrade Paths for 2003 so that why I'm raising the question. Thanks Ben Benoit |

| RE: Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 in-place upgrade to Server 2003 with AD
Hi, Thanks for posting here. As you mentioned, it's Microsoft supported upgrading path from Windows server 2003 Storage Server R2 to Windows server 2003 R2. For supported upgrading path to Windows server 2003 R2, please review the following article: upgrade to Windows Server 2003 R2 http://technet2.microsoft.com/window...5-6a98-46c9-a9 1a-1de30d7ad02e1033.mspx?mfr=true With that being said, only the following OS versions are supported to upgrade to Windows server 2003 R2: oWindows Server 2003 with a service pack oWindows Server 2003 without a service pack oWindows 2000 Server oWindows NT Server 4.0 with Service Pack 5 or later oWindows NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition with Service Pack 5 or later To achieve the goal, you may consider 'migrating' to Windows Server 2003 R2 instead of upgrading. In a domain environment, we can promote a new Windows server 2003 R2 as additional DC at first, and then use FSMT (File Server Migration Toolkit ) to migrate all the files and folders residing in Windows server 2003 Storage Server to new Windows server 2003 R2. Finally, demote this Windows server 2003 Storage Server. More information about FSMT (File Server Migration Toolkit): ======================================= FSMT helps the system administrator easily migrate and consolidate folders from servers between different computers in a domain. You can download this tool from here: Microsoft File Server Migration Toolkit 1.0: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...eae-930a-42b0- b595-66f462f5d87b&DisplayLang=en For more details about this tool, please refer to: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...ocs/msfsc.mspx I hope this helps. If anything is unclear, please post back. Thanks. Thanks for the great response, that was the conclusion I also came to to do a migration unfortunately this is a smaller school and they ordered this server before me and it came to a budget decision to go cheep and got the Storage Server so that being said they don't have the money for a new server any time soon to migrate to. So although it's not supported can a in-place upgrade be done. Thanks Ben Benoit |
