Hi everybody. My problem is this: I have a router, which fails to give
me an internet connection because it has a problem with relaying info
to or from the DNS. If you are familiar with these kinds of things,
please help me out here. The detailed story is as follows:
This is my set-up, as completely as I can make it. I am using a
desktop computer I built myself: intel Q6600 kentsfield processor, with
a MSI G31M motherboard with built-in gigabit network and really basic
HD, DVD, memory, video and audio. Installed on this system is a 32-bit
version of Windows Vista Ultimate.
My wireless router is a Sweex LW055 wireless broadband router,
allowing 4 wired connections besides the wireless connection. This
router is connected to a Motorola SB5100E Surfboard Cable modem which
connects me to my cable network connection by Casema in the
Netherlands.
So this is what happens: I connect my computer directly to my Motorola
modem and after a few seconds, I'm connected to local network and the
internet. Now I plug my network cable out of my computer and into the
WAN port of my sweex router. Then I plug a cable into the PC1 port of
the router and plug that into my computer again. The SYS, WAN and PC1
lights on the router start flashing almost immediately. For clarity
purposes, I now reset my router by pressing the reset button on the
side for 10 seconds, all lights go out and after a few seconds, come
back online again (and also start flashing again). Now I go to my
network connections and I see the following: [computer] --- green line
--- [network (local)] --- gray line with red cross --- Internet. So I
do get a local network connection (and I can log into my router on IP
192.168.55.1 as well) but my router does not supply me with internet,
although the lights on my router are still flashing.
If I ask windows to diagnose and repair my connection, it says there
might be a problem with my DNS configuration, as windows failed to
find www.microsoft.com using DNS. My computer is set to receive IPv4,
IPv6 and DNS automatically. When I log into my router and look at the
WAN setup configuration, I see the following. WAN setup is set to use
Dynamic IP user (cable modem), where PPPoE User (ADSL), Static IP user
and PPTP are the other options of choise. Under DHCP Client Setup, the
field for host name is empty, MAC is 00-16-0a-0e-6b-c5, Default MAC is
also 00-16-0a-0e-6b-c5, MTU is 1514, and primary and secundary DNS are
both empty. I hope this means more to you than it does to me :) Is
there anything you can provide me with that can help me solve this
problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Leon van Gurp
