nslookup dns request timed out 2 seconds

When I query for mx records I get a timeout in 2 seconds the 1st 4-5
times.- once it hits, it returns an answer. Is there a good diagnostic
tool to see if this is something we can fix?

    thanks

Not enough information to go on. (e.g. Using Windows 2003/2008 DNS? Is
EDNS0 support on or off? Have you taken a network trace at the time of
performing the query to see what is transpiring between your DNS server and
the magical cloud known as the internet?)
