    Restore Windows 2003 server

Due to some reason, a Windows 2003 server need to be reformatted!
By performing the below steps, will it works especially those third party
applcations i had installed in the server?

    a) Re-partition the hard drives
    b) Manually install Windows 2003 Server Std Edt.
    b) Only restore 'Program Files' folders and 'System State' from backup tape
    to the server

I expect it to work but I always perform these tests on
a spare disk while everything is running smoothly. In this
way I have the confidence that I can do it when the crunch
    comes.

If you have never done a test restore then you should do
this one on a spare disk too, before erasing the original.

    It doesn't work!!!
Wondering whether it works if i,

    a) Manually install Windows Server Std Edt
    b) Restore all 'System State', 'Windows' folder, 'Program Files' folder and
all other folders in C drive.

Basically, what i want is to revert to the previous working condition state.

"It doesn't work" does not tell us a great deal. If you need
further assistance then you have to supply much more
information. Remember - we can't see your machine!

I just restored System State and one of the application in the Program
    Files.
The MS Windows has prompt alot of Windows errors and the particular
    application cannot be executed.

I would agree with your last suggestion, system state, windows folder,
program files folder, and perhaps even C:\Documents and settings or C:
\users, depending on OS version. Some apps register DLLs and OCX's in
the windows directory, may be part of the problem.

Is drive image practical? Ghost or TrueImage will do the job nicely....
