| Too many processors
I have a Dell PowerEdge 6300 with 2 dual core Xeon processors. According to the Device Manager, I have 8 processors. I can just remove 6 of them or is there a better way to get Windows to detect the correct number of processors? Thanks, John |

It's not wrong - it believe Windows will show 8 because you have 2 dual-core processors, most likely "4-way", which will come up as 8 in device manager. I can't say I know exactly how to explain it though because I don't know the ins and outs of processor technology. I have an HP Proliant DL580, with 2 dual-core processors, and it comes up as 8 as well because it's "4-way". I would not remove the processors if I were you. I'm sure someone else can better explain it... Hello AnytimeAnywhere, > I have a Dell PowerEdge 6300 with 2 dual core Xeon processors. > According to the Device Manager, I have 8 processors. Thanks for the explanation. I'll leave it alone. | Re: Too many processors
Just wanted to add: I suppose it could be wrong, but the fact is I purchased 3 identical servers with 2 physical processors installed (dual-core Xeon) and each server comes up with having 8 processors in device manager. So however Windows is coming with 8 I'm not sure, but I guess I just wouldn't go about deleting the processors from device manager. Windows is obviously picking up more than the actual physical # of processors installed per socket and incorporating the dual technology, etc, and finding there is more than 2. I don't really know what 4-way means other than it was listed as a spec next to "Server Scalability" for my server. My server can have up to 4 physical processors installed, and then I bet Windows will then see 16 processors in device manager if i were t install 4 dual processors total. I also have a couple of other servers that show more than the actual physical #, but those are also dual-core processors, etc. If you are concerned about licensing, such as for SQL, it does go by the number of sockets. So, in my case, even though it shows 8 processors, I only have 2 sockets with 2 processors installed (1proc/socket), so I would only need 2 SQL processor licenses. I have a good article on that somewhere... > It's not wrong - it believe Windows will show 8 because you have 2 > dual-core > processors, most likely "4-way", which will come up as 8 in device > manager. > I can't say I know exactly how to explain it though because I don't > know > the ins and outs of processor technology. | Re: Too many processors
Just a thought: I believe device manager indicates twice the number due to the hyper-threading of the processor. Which enables simultaneous multi-threading of the computations. I have noticed the similar indications of XP machines. Dual Core processors come in two types, with and without hyper threading, so each CPU has two cores, and each core could also be hyper threading - so, a single Dual Core CPU could show as 4 CPU. There are also Quad Core CPU's and they show as 4 CPU's. In my experience I've not personally seen any Quad Core CPU's that also are hyper threaded. When you have 8 CPU's you really need to pay attention to SQL Queries because of parallelism and blocking. -- Leythos - Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum. - Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented worker" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist" spam999free@rrohio.com (remove 999 for proper email address) |

2 hyperthreaders per core (?) 2 cores per processor 2 processors on mobo 2 x 2 x 2 = 8 Saucy |
