Problems with Default User in netlogon

Hi All

I hope someone can help me with this problem. We have a Windows 2003
Enterprise server with a mix of Windows 2000 Pro and Windows XP Pro
machines and a Windows 2003 R2 terminal server.

About a 18 months ago I created a Default User based on a Windows 2000 Pro
machines and put it in the netlogon share of the domain controller, this
seem to work fine. However I deleted it a few weeks ago because of some
network changes, but even though I have done this it still seems to take
effect, for instants, when a new users logs on My Computer contains links
to mapped drives that still exist but are mapped differently in the login
script and even occures when the users doesn't even have a login script.

I have tried to remove the mapped drives on a per user basis but they just
keep coming back at next login/reboot, I have tried deleting the profile
but it makes no difference.

Also in the Default User I had setup Outlook 2003 to auto run at login and
configure itself using a prf file stored in the netlogon share. After
deleting the Default User, this still happens even when the user has no
login script assigned and it's a brand new PC which hasn't been configured
to autorun Outlook on first login. We have some general accounts without
mailboxes which causes an error eveytime they logon. I have renamed the
prf and now instead of trying to apply it it just loads Outlook at login,
so it still seems to be trying to load the Default User profile from the
server

Both of the above affect any user (new or old) that logs on to the domain
using a brand new imaged PC or an existing pc. Local users aren't affected.

I have also noticed that when a user logs on to a Windows XP Pro or the
Windows 2003 terminal server, the windows sounds they hear are from Windows
2000.

It seems that all the PCs are finding a Default User profile on the server
and still applying it despite the fact that it no longer exists anywhere on
the server, I've even done a search for it with no results.

I have even created a new blank Default User profile, and gave the Everyone
group permission to access it but it doesn't take affect.

Dispite a lot of googling I can't seem to find any info on the correct way
to remove it, if there is one. I'm tearing my hair out over this one, it's
causing a few issues now and I'm deperate to get rid of it. Am I missing
something simple here?

I think you've deleted the wrong "Default User" profile folder. If you
delete the real thing then Windows will complain bitterly when a new
user logs on for the first time.

I'm not quite sure which one you mean, how many Default User profile are
there?, I count 3, one on each workstation in Docs and Settings, 1 on
the server in Docs and Setting and the one I deleted that was located in
\\mydomaincontroller\netlogon\. This is the one that was created when I
clicked Copy To and entered \\mydomaincontroller\netlogon\Default User
and gave the everyone group access to download it.

The "Default User" profile folder is a hidden folder that resides on the
user's workstation.

As I said above I know that there is a default user profile in
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User which is hidden on every
workstation and on every server, I have not touched any of these at all.

What I did is create a new user and setup their profile how I want all
new profiles to be configured then under Administrator I followed this
link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/168475 to copy it to the netlogon
share on the server, however I deleted it recently but even new PCs are
still using it to create new user logins.

Surely it cannot copy something that does not exist anymore, even if the
old workstations cached a copy the new workstations cannot possibly find
it as it was deleted before they were even built.

I've sorted it now, it seems that someone from our company added an old
copy of the logon script into the main Default Domain Policy GPO,
removing this has sorted the map drives issue and the Outlook auto run
at login issue. I can live with Windows 2000 sounds on the newer PCs.

Thanks Pegasus for the help.
