Server 2003. Problem: How to configure DHCP and PXE

Hello everybody

I'm a newbie in Windows Server 2003 and don't know how to configure the
following...

I have a server connected to our domain (one the first NIC). Now I would
like to configure
this server to provide IP addresses to clients connected on the second NIC
of the server.
I already know how to configure DHCP so that IPs are only provided on the
second NIC.
My problem now... I don't receive IP addresses on the client.

My goals are...
- to reach that my server acts as a DHCP and PXE server for the clients
connected on the second NIC
- that the clients connected to the second NIC can access my domain
resources (that means,
that I have to configure a routing - but I don't know how)

Further information:
- The server is not a DNS server nor a domain controller
- The first NIC has the static IP address 10.49.182.137
- The second NIC has the static IP address 10.49.182.139 (but this can be
changed if necessary)

Please let me know what further information you need to be able to help me.

Hello Matias,

I can recommend to buy a small switch and do not multihome your server with
2 NIC's with different ip's. Prevents you for a lot of problems.
Also for the PXE part, what will you achive? Using of RIS 2003 or WDS 2003SP2?
Then you need in your network Active Directory services, DNS server, DHCP
server.

Thanks for your reply.

For the PXE part I want to install the TFTP service and transfer
a simple DOS 6.22 bootdisk. I have some switches, but how do
you mean that I can configure it to reach my goal?

The problem is that we have a big environment in our office.
Until now my server was only a little file server for two users.
Now this users need to have a separate DHCP server because
they need a different PXE boot file as in the rest of our environment.

I really don't know how to configure that...

Hello Matias,

If you use one subnet like you do, the easiest part is to connect all machines
to the switch, including the router (if available). Then any machine can
connect to each other, for the server choose only one NIC and disable the
other or use some teaming software, which allows you to use both NIC's with
one ip address. The router ip address will be set as default gateway on all
NIC's.

So the clients should only get the DOS6.22 files to the machines or what
will you achive with the DOS copy from the tftp server?

First I want to thank you for your help...

I think I have to place my problem in the german newsgroups because
I can't explain my problem very good in english. I give a last try...

We have 30 clients in the same subnet. All members of our domain.
In the same subnet there I also my server. 2 of this 30 clients should
receive
another PXE boot server than the other 28. But I can't configure the other
DHCP servers or anything else of the rest of the domain. Only my server and
maybe
a switch. Thath means that the other 28 clients have to receive the standard
PXE boot file from our domain. Now I would like to configure my server as a
DHCP
server to serve this 2 clients with a DHCP IP address and with the wanted
boot file.

I hope you understood my problem... else tell me what's not clear.

Hi Matias,

You don't need to have a second PXE/RIS/WDS/DHCP server for your
requirements, point all clients at the same PXE/RIS/WDS server, add your
'different' boot disk as an operating system and use the OSChooser menu to
select the different image for those two machines.
