Changing IP Address of AD server with DNS.

    Hello,

I have two DC running Windows 2000. I have gone through the steps to prepare
the 2000 servers for two new 2003 DC's. There were no problems with the
preparation of the 2000 servers or the installation/promotion of the new
    servers.

I have DNS installed and I am in the process of copying the DCHP and WINS
    databases to the new servers.

We have over 100 thin clients over a large geographical area that do
not use DHCP and the prefered DNS server is entered manually and I would
like to avoid having to travel to these locations to change the prefered DNS
server. So what I would like to do before I decommission the 2000 servers is
to change the IP addresses of the new servers to the old servers and visa
versa. Does anyone know if there are any problems with doing this?

As for as DNS goes, it goes pretty easy, WINS is where you'll have issues
because each WINS server must own its own records. Swapping IPs on WINS
servers causes pretty much a breakdown in WINS replication.
The best solution I found with WINS is to completely clear the WINS database
on all servers after you swap IPs and start over fresh.

Re: Changing IP Address of AD server with DNS.

    Kevin,

Thanks for the information. At present I have the WINS service installed on
both new servers but not running. So, it's just a matter of restarting the
service and making them replication partners after I change the IP address.

    Thanks for your help.
