ntbackup restore problem

I have a client that is using a Quantum DLT-V4 on a Windows 2003 server with ntbackup to perform backups. I recently tried to restore a single file from one of the tapes and received an error:

"An inconsistency has been enountered on the requested media"

The backups seem to be performing properly, as there have been no errors pertaining to a failed backup on the server. I tried to restore from multiple different tapes and I get the same error. Any ideas on what i can try to resolve this?

Has your client ever been able to retrieve any files before?

No. They havent tried to on the current setup before. This backup system has only been in place for a couple months.

In this case the backup system must be considered uncommissioned
and unproven. If I was in your position then I would do a few test
backups & recoveries to see if things work as expected.

It is a common omission for inexperienced server administrators
to skip testing a backup system after installation. A backup solution
must only be considered complete after a representative chunk of
data has been recovered.

Well, it's backing up, but not recovering. I need to figure out how to make it recover. Any ideas on what could be the issue here?

No, not really. I would need to perform a manual backup followed
by a manual restore to convince myself that the process works the
way it is supposed to.

Manual backup does work. I've done that. Manual restore does not.

If you found yourself in this situation, what would you do?

I would play the elimination game until I found the culprit:
- Different tapes
- Different backup media (e.g. back up to disk)
- Different set of folders to be backed up (small & large)
- Different backup software
- Different tape drive

ntbackup restore problem

Hello ,

some one please help me................

We have a an issue in regards to FULL NTBackups

When Shadow Copy is enabled on the SBS server on the C drive , after the backups are finished for a Full Backup every backup media we have on the backup drive is not recognizable for a restore.

If we turn off shadow copy on the C drive on the SBS server and let the SBS Full Backup run the Full backup is readable and we can restore.

This is an issue we have been working on now for over a month now and is getting to be a real problem.

If you have any advice or know of a fix this issue please let us know so we can review and possibly schedule the to resolve the issue
